And then the snow came
The snow hit hard and fast

So the first few days were really nice. Temperatures in the upper 30s. Very pleasant to get around. And then, Iceland became Iceland. Snow hit --- hard and fast. The video says it all.
At first I was really bummed out, but as the day went on, I found the snow really relaxing. The photo at the top of this page, and those in the slideshow, illustrate the incredible beauty of light, fresh, peaceful snow not turned into black slush. Despite the mixture of snow and sleet, people just bundled up and walked through it all, no problem. Guess that's because they're used to it. There's no particular point to this, except we often don't look close enough at what nature gives us. Lucky me, I had a day and night when I did. |
So why was I out in this? I went to the Kringlan Shopping Mall because it was Ash Wednesday. What? Well, in Iceland, Ash Wednesday is sort of like our Halloween, with twists.
Children dress up, just like in the U.S. instead of knocking on doors and asking for candy, children in Iceland go to business owners. And, in order to get candy, they have to sing a song. I wanted to see this in action, and figured the best place to do so was at a Mall. The Mall was full of children and parents, gleefully going from store to store, singing their songs, collecting their candy. Just kids and families having a great time. Not even the snow outside could damper their spirit. Those kids just sang like it was sunny. |
