hallgrimskirkja ---the church is worth a visit
This image really doesn't do this structure justice. It's really impressive when you see it up close --- and it's breathtaking when you look at the city from a top of it.
The church is located near Reykjavik's major shopping district, and easy 10 to 15 minute walk from downtown. That statue out front is of explorer Leif Ericson, renowned as the first European to land in North America (like, 500 years before Columbus). The literature says the statue is gift from the USA. Classy.
It costs about $6 USD to take the elevator to near the top of the church, then walk three short flights to the tip top. The windows are covered with bars, so for those of you afraid of heights, you can't fall out, unless your carrying a blow torch and some serious bolt cutters.
Not only can you see the city below, but on a fairly clear day, some snow-capped mountains, too. As you can see, it wasn't too sunny the day I went, but it didn't matter. I could see plenty, and it was way cool. There's some more in the slide show below.
